Why Replace Concrete Floors?
Old concrete floors can disintegrate over time. Naturally occurring sulphates in the soils are usually the culprit for this type of problem. Water seeping through the concrete surface can also cause the soil beneath to heave and break up the floor.
Older homes are most likely to be in need of concrete floor replacement. They’re often built with only a thin coat of concrete (2”or so) and were not created with a proper base or re-enforcing steel to prevent additional cracking.
Sunken floors due to water erosion is another reason for the replacement of concrete floors. Walk out basements are very susceptible to this.

ABALON KNOWS
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I replace my concrete floor?
You should replace your concrete floor when repairing is not a good option. Large cracks in the surface can lead to problems and can potentially extend all the way to the subbase. Erosion will allow water to seep through the cracks, and the presence of water will lead to further degradation of the concrete as it freezes, expands and thaws with temperature fluctuations.
What are the common reasons to replace concrete floors?
Concrete floors can deteriorate due to a variety of reasons. These issues include:
- An insufficient and ineffective floor drainage system causing water damage
- Moisture seeping through cracks in the foundation
- Concrete gradually settling in place as the soil shifts
- Salt-based snow melts brought in by car tires and shoes over the winter months for several years that slowly erodes the concrete surface
- A poor concrete installation job with incomplete preparation done beforehand to make sure the soil was compacted and the floor was sufficiently reinforced
- A poor-quality concrete mixture made from low-quality materials that can corrode over the years
My floor looks like it has several mini active volcanos everywhere, what’s wrong?
It’s highly likely that there is water getting under the floor and the sulphates are now attacking the concrete. It is time to contact a concrete floor replacement professional, such as Abalon, and replace your floor.

- A perimeter drainage system that runs into a sump pit
- A radon gas collection system
- A vapor barrier
- A reinforcing steel grid
At our clients’ request, we can also install hydronic heating lines. Concrete floor replacements take on average one week to complete. Upon completion, you can rest assured that your concrete floor will last a lifetime.
